CHAPTER FOURTEEN
STRAWBERRY
Tye sat outside of the apartment he shared with Joanne for one hour. He knew she was inside because her car was out front. But he didnât feel like going in. Something about being with her at that moment felt dry.
So he drove the fuck off.
Instead of returning to his old apartment, he went to a hotel, tapped his credit card for a room and got himself situated.
After checking in, first he cleaned his wounds, then he poured himself another drink, downed it and did it four more times. When it was all said and done, he was five drinks in and lying on the bed when he reopened the diary.

Dear Diary,
Today I saw my aunt.
She looks bad.
As Iâm writing these words I donât know how to feel. I expected it to be such a happy moment, because even though my aunt and I are close, up until that day she had always lived out of town.
If she hadnât we would be closer. I wouldnât have as much bad karma.
Because she and I got one another.
She would always say she was as weird as me.
I think it was true.
The day started out easy going in her new apartment. I had gone over to her house happily after she told me she would make my favorite meal.
Itâs simple, Diary.
I love fried chicken, collard greens and mac and cheese.
But there's something about food that's made with love that tastes so good. I didnât want to be a freeloader. So I brought over strawberry cake which she loved and we ate in her small kitchen and talked about everything under the sun.
We talked about her boyfriend who would be moving down in a few weeks.
We talked about her job and how it was so easy she could do it in her sleep. She even suggested that I apply since all she had to do was answer phone calls from home. And then I reminded her how nervous I am to talk to most people.
She didn't say much after that. Just told me that I could do anything I set my mind to once I got ready.
We talked about my boyfriend Peter. And how I liked him so much. And how he put a smile on my face even when he didn't know.
Even if he wasn't around.
When I was sitting in her kitchen just thinking about spending time with him later, it got me excited in a way I didn't think I would ever feel.
I liked to say I was in crazy love.
We also talked about mama.
Although I didn't like to talk about mama too much. It's not like I didn't love her. But there is a special kind of emptiness in a person's heart when their mama is no longer on Earth.
I know about that emptiness.
I can almost handle anything.
But when she died, half of my reason for living died too.
My aunt mustâve realized talking about my mama was too painful. So she decided we should talk about something else.
